WIS Math Counts Big Island Champions

Congratulations to the Newbery Quiz Bowl team at WIS.
Members:Anne Formanek, Stacey Torigoe, Alyssa Nakao, Camie Yamashita, Kathryn Kouchi, alternate Noe Waters brought home 4th place ribbon and gift certificate from Borders. This was a job well done, especially with the limited prep time the team had.......................L. Fukushima
 
Congratulations Mari Takemoto-Chock, she will be going to the national science fair exhibit as a Jr. Reasearch finalist.
 
MATH COUNTS 2002 TEAM

Update:WIS Math count team placed 3rd in the state compition held on Oahu.
Congratulations to this year's MathCounts Team who placed first in the District Competition (Big Island). Jonathan Paranada, Collin Takasaki, Marl Takemoto-Chock and Jonathan Yu placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th places respectively in the Individual competition. Also, congratulations to our alternate team:
Kazuya Ikemoto, Eric Okumoto, Kaithlyn Ogi, and Casey Yamashita who also did well.

Geography Bee 2002
 
Which large city on the Gulf Coastal Plain of Texas was flooded in
June
2001 due to rains brought by tropical storm Allison?  Eighth grader,
Leonard
Franklin, successfully answered this last question to become the winner
of
the Waiakea Intermediate School geography bee. Casey Yamashita came in
second
place with Patrick Upky coming in third.  Other finalist were Charles
Fontanilla, Stacey Torigoe and Ian Watanabe, who out performed
thirty-three
other contestants in grade level competitions.
The school-level Bee, was the first round in the 14th annual National
Geography Bee.  The National Geography Society will provide an
all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the state champion to
participate in the national championship on May 21 and 22.  The winner
will
receive a $25,000 college scholarship.
 
 
REFLECTIONS PROGRAM WINNERS

PTA Reflections Program: Cami-Lee Aina and Kelsey Wong represented WIS at the Hawaii District
Competition with their art work. Kelsey Wong's art work has been chosen to go on to state level competition.
Congratulations to Kelsey and all those who participated.

Math Counts 2000-2001 Big Island Champs.
Waiakea Intermediate came in 3rd state wide.
The team consisted of Kristen Bautista, Aaron Yoshida, Jacob LaPinta, Mari Takemoto-Chock, Curtis Ogi, Jonathan Paranada, Tylor Kaneshiro and coach Joanne Berryman.
