1. Corrections to February 10th, 2004 Notes:
· Item #4, bullet #4, last sentence should read: The parent, student, classified, and community
stakeholder groups did vote on the question. Two additional waiver days was accepted.
· Item #9, bullet #1, should read: A survey of the teachers showed that 80% of the teachers
favored
· Notes were approved as corrected.
2. Guest, John Muldoon was in attendance to present the idea of a Complex wide SCBM meeting,
tentatively for October, 2004 to discuss topics of mutual concern. No Child Left Behind
requirements has presented the need for collaborative efforts. The complex failed in the Service
Testing area, particularly in Responsible behavior. Also, suggested were the issues of Dress
code/Uniforms as standard attire (Expectations are similar but not enforced). Add to the agenda: What is the protocol for parents/students at high school?, Eighth grade orientation?, Information on transition for students and parents?, Modified school year calendar for entire complex. The purpose is to set and
enforce expectations, use the same vocabulary/on the same page, complex wide. This first meeting will
be to determine whether theres a need, monthly or quarterly, etc. Effort will be made to set meetings
in conjunction with the individual school SCBM meetings.
Mr. Mybeck moved to accept the concept of a Complex SCBM meeting, seconded by Ms. Sumida. All
present were in favor.
3. Parent Conferences
A modification in scheduling/times was suggested to increase parents attendance. 90% of parents sign
up for conferences, about 70% attend.
· A full day devoted to conferences without students was suggested but not accepted.
· Early evening conferences was suggested. Teachers would be entitled to comp time.
· A possibility that one evening may be scheduled for conferences. Teachers would be allowed to leave early or be given comp time.
Grade level leaders will confer with their team.
4. Period scheduling for 04-05
· In retrospect, science is now required as a full year course. Every core class, Math, English, Social Studies, and Science has to be passed, every year to advance to the next grade. When a student is failing, summer school or correspondance courses would be recommended. If a 4 on 7 period schedule was adopted, with 65 minute classes, students would not have to give up elective courses. More study hall time may be possible. Another consideration, is the 6 on 7 schedule with 45 minute classes.
· Mr. Muldoon was asked if the longer 90 minute classes at Waiakea High School presented any problems. He commented that some teachers are able to instruct for this period of time and some teachers are not able.
· The last Professional Development Day in May will be utilized to address this issue.
5. Additional 2 Professional Development Days
Mrs. Duffy presented the SCBM Waiver/Exception Request Form that will be submitted to the Department of Education for approval.
· The Professional Collaboration agenda is a draft and based on Standards Implementation Design (SID) and will be finalized by the leadership team.
· Page 2, B. Provide the following information for each staff development day: Corrections were made to the Waiver Dates. Dates should be 09/02/04 and 09/03/04
· Page 3, CHRONOLOGY OF EVENTS. First three bullets, the year should read 2003, not 2004. The last bullet, this sentence was changed to read: March 9, 2004 SCBM Council meeting to approve the request of 2 additional waiver days for SY 2004-2005 and SY 2005-2006. Laurine Morigaki moved to approve this statement as modified. Elaine Sumida seconded. All present were in favor.
6. Announcement: Mr. Thereaux, Principal at Keaukaha, wrote an article in the Star Bulletin to Govenor Lingle, inviting her to experience school activity.
7. Agenda for next meeting, April 13th, 2004.
Facilitator: Laurene Morigaki, Recorder: Gayle Kamei.
· Reorganizing/restructuring of the school system. Components of the legislation to give the school/community councils fiscal authorization.
· Follow-up on healthier foods at the cafeteria.
· Update on waiver requests for 2 additional days.
Meeting was adjouned at 6:35 P.M.
